Van Drew the projected winner in New Jersey's 2nd District

Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, the party switcher who pledged his “undying loyalty” to President Donald Trump, has been reelected in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, POLITICO and The Associated Press project.

Van Drew, who changed parties in late 2019 after losing Democratic support for his refusal to vote to impeach the president, defeated Democrat Amy Kennedy, an Atlantic County native who married into the famous political dynasty.

Kennedy, who is married to former Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), has not conceded. Van Drew declared victory late Tuesday.

With 80 percent of precincts reporting, Van Drew leads Kennedy by about 5 percentage points, or 14,500 votes. Thousands of votes are left to be counted.

Van Drew’s victory keeps New Jersey’s House delegation at 10 Democrats and two Republicans.

The 2nd District is more rural and working class than some of the more suburban, wealthier districts farther north that used to be solidly Republican but have turned Democratic amid backlash to Trump.
