Jon Stewart to attend Senate Dems lunch ahead of 9/11 victims fund vote

Comedian Jon Stewart will attend the Senate Democratic Caucus lunch on Tuesday as the chamber is poised to permanently authorize the 9/11 victims fund.

The former "Daily Show" star who advocates for 9/11 responders and beefing up the fund was invited by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.

Y.).

The bill to aid victims and first responders of the 2001 terrorist attacks is expected to clear the Senate and go to President Donald Trump's desk Tuesday afternoon.

"These men and women, many of them sick, some of them gravely so, won't have to return to Congress any more to fight for the compensation they always should have been given," Schumer said.

Stewart has railed against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for not more quickly passing the bill, though McConnell has said repeatedly its passage was never in doubt. "The Senate has never failed to attend to the fund before and we're not about to do so now," McConnell said on Tuesday.
